Rough Diamond Appraisal

To evaluate a rough diamond it is necessary to calculate the result that will be obtained after being cut. This estimated calculation requires knowledge and experience in this evaluation so that the rough diamond cutting is as precise as possible. The shape, color, clarity and weight are taken into consideration. In practice, the shape often determines the origin of the rough diamond and with it many aspects that may help in the initial evaluation of the gemologist.

These independent variables – shape, color, clarity, and weight – create the “puzzle” to find the type of cut that will result in higher value and liquidity for the cut diamond. It is worth remembering that color and clarity can change during the cutting  process in the search for the best use of the rough diamond. Certain cut intensifies color or softens and minimizes inclusions that may impact the final diamond evaluation. Fluorescence is also very important in determining the value, as it may be desirable or not, depending on the color grade of the diamond and its intensity since this independent variable is not apparently perceived.

Although there are currently machines to solve this “puzzle”, it is critical that the cutter has a successful practice of his services and exchange ideas with other industry professionals to make the most appropriate and profitable decision for the rough diamond customer.
